I just went to movie night at my church (mostly because my mom told me to) and they were showing October Baby. Now, if you don't know what the movie's about, it centers around a girl named Hannah Lawson who just found out that not only was she adopted, she is the survivor of a failed abortion. She goes on a journey to try and discover who she is. It's an amazing movie and you all should go see it.
Also, this week has been kinda special to my family. Exactly 16 years and 3 days ago, July 15th, 1995, my little brother Steven was born. Exactly 16 years and one day ago, he died. He had a lot of health issues and had low oxygen in his blood- something about transposition of the main vessels (the arteries/vessels in his heart were flip flopped- so the return was going to the exit and visa versa) and he had an open diaphragm which meant his insides were are mixed up. But he had good lungs- my mom heard him cry, and my dad saw him open his eye. He followed family tradition and peed on the nurses, and he fixed my father's relationship with his dad.
See, my dad was born with heart problems, just like Steven and Elli were. It runs in the family. Only when my dad was born, they didn't really know what to do. (He was born in the 60's, I think). They told my dad's parents that he wouldn't live to be 2. Well, if they had been right, I wouldn't be here today. Anyway, my grandpa didn't really want to get close to my dad because he kept thinking that my dad was going to die, so why get attached? When Steven died, and I don't know the details as I was one and a half when this all happened, but they figured it out and my dad and my grandpa are now close. My dad always says Steven is the most efficient guy he's ever known because he accomplished everything God wanted him to do in 2 days. I agree.
Anyway, there's a connection between Steven and the October Baby movie. I'm going to write it in white so if you haven't seen the movie, (because it's connected to a spoiler- it won't ruin the movie for you, but it was a great surprise, and I don't want to take that away from you) you don't have to read it. But if you've seen the movie, just highlight it and you'll see it.
Hannah discovers that she has an older twin brother (much like the twins in my story, Calista and Gabriel) and that he was severely injured (ie lost an arm) in the botched abortion attempt. He fights for 4 months, and then dies. (again, like Calista and Gabriel) His name is later revealed to be Jonathan David. I would've been named David Allen Francis had I been a boy, yet the next child born, a boy, was named Steven Curtis. My mom didn't know it, but her mom was going to name all the girls in the family (all 6 of em) Steven Curtis had they been boys. When #7 was a boy, he was named David Michael. Don't ask me why. Anyway, David's kind of a family name. That's all I can come up with for now.
Anyway, October Baby was a wonderful movie, and I want the monologue that Hannah tells the priest in the old cathedral, but I can't find the screenplay anywhere. I'll just have to keep looking.
((and yes, this post is late- sorry. Was written July 18th))

What happens when you write about a blind girl...
Now, since I've been thinking about Beauty is Blind a lot, I find myself not turning on the lights when I go to the bathroom or enter my room. Or I close my eyes when I'm at home and walk around. Just to get into Calista's shoes.
We just got back from a road trip to my grandma's cabin- so first stop is by defult, the bathroom. So yeah...there I am in a dark bathroom, with the door closed and peeing, and my poor brother's so confused because he hears someone in there...but the light's off!
Ah, the dangers of writing first person stories from a blind girl's point of view.
I'm going to try to do Camp NaNoWriMo again- I realized that I have been doing the work of 3 and the fact that I made it almost half way's a big achievement. At least for a musical.
Need to apply for colleges (St. Ben's, Concordia, and Coe) *groan*
Need to find a job. *groan*
But I took senior pictures this weekend- they turned out pretty good- will be posting them soon.
Umm, have had a lot of weird moments with Calista lately. Writers, do you ever feel like your characters are talking to you? Like, literally?
Once, you may remember this because I blogged about it, I was working on a scene where Calista was locked in a cellar and had just come to and was trying to figure stuff out. Then it started raining and I got the idea for Storm Children (Ciro, Elysia, Ferren, and Rain) So I abandoned poor Calista in Julian's cellar and worked with Rain and the gang for a while, nurturing a new story.
The next night, I went back to Beauty is Blind and Calista was none too happy with me for leaving her locked in a cellar. I could've sworn the conversation went like this: (all in my crazy little mind)
Me: Hey, Calista, I'm back.
Calista: It's about time!
Me: What? What did I do?
Calista: You left me locked in cellar, that's what! (she continues to rant and rave for a while)
Me: (thinking) maybe I should let you get angry more often...
And this morning, I'm trying to pay attention in church and the climax scene is stuck in my head. It involves Calista accidentally falling into a body of water. (She's terrified of water- she almost drowned in a watering hole when she was little, but Aurelia saved her. She's been deathly afraid of it ever since. There's water separating her from Damien in the climax) Anyway, she takes a step, (this is all slow-mo in my head) Briony tries to warn her, but it's too late. Calista goes splashing in the water, confusion all around. She panics...
I try to pay attention to church... but then I think of what happened the last time I left Calista in a precarious position... so I resolve to finish the scene... but I can't. Yeah. I think I tried to apologize to her. Called her Callie, and she wasn't too fond of that nickname. Yeah.
((okay, done being insane))
And my brother (Lee) put his shirt in the freezer before he left. He's now wearing it. Weirdo.
gotta go. bye!

Mission, Haircuts, Camp, and just about everything else I forgot to blog about
Sorry, peoples. Have no idea why, but I have not blogged in quite some time. So I feel like I owe ya. Lots of stuff has happened in my life.
Number 1. I got a haircut. It's not short enough. As of now, even though I just showered yesterday, it's filthy and hanging on my head like a rag. Am going to go sit in the tub with a book after this- that's what I do to get clean in the summer. Call me weird. anyway, my hair was down just past my shoulders. It's hanging at my shoulders now. I think I want it more towards my chin. I just have too much hair. It's not long enough to pull back, but it's not short enough NOT to pull back. *sigh*
Number 2. Just got back from a mission trip in... North Dakota! My friend Mia of Aperture Mittens is off overseas in Ukraine or France or something, and my friend Amy, who does not blog, is probably in Mexico or something. She usually is. Still, I loved North Dakota. The weather was nice, the people spoke English, the mission was only like $250 to go on, and the kids really needed it. We ran a residential camp for 1st and 2nd graders in the area. We were always with them. We never got a break. It was always "I want a piggy back!" "Can you give me a shoulder ride!" "I don't like vegetables!" "I want to go home!" "She's calling names!" (There was a lot of major fighting going on with a lot of the girls, even I got in on it the first night when my fellow counselors left me alone in the dorm full of little girls who decided to torment me and put me in "jail". Anyway, I usually ended up helping diffuse these fights. Surprisingly enough, that gave me great satisfaction when they all apologized.) I prayed with the kids when they hurt themselves, and taught this one little girl, Kateri, who kept falling and hurting the same knee, to pray for her guardian angel to protect her. Imagine my joy when she comes running up to me, saying, "Guess what? I almost fell, but my guardian angel stopped me!"
The kids are so open to God's love there. There was a Pieta statue near the game field (for those of you who don't know what that is, this is what it looks like)
And the kids would just stand there and look at it. They'd ask questions about why Jesus died, and I'd get to answer them. They asked so many questions-they were so hungry for God- I really felt like I was on mission. I've only been on one other mission our church offers (my church does like 5- most in the North Dakota area- I've been on the one in Missouri.) Anyway, during some of the fights, the kids would bring up that they learned it from their parents. A dad tosses his three year old son on to the couch, a 4 year old little brother cusses up a storm, moms are drinking, dads don't care- these kids are in desperate need of love. And being that our theme was "Love Never Fails" well... I hope we showed them.
Needless to say, I'm going back next year. It was my first time on this mission, which we call CLC, and I loved it. It was the hardest work I've ever done, I lost half my voice, but it was great.
Number 3. Camp NaNoWriMo. *sigh* I hit 47 pages. My telling my parents I would fail somehow triggered a series of events that set of a whole bunch of steam and resulted in a huge fight. Not anything I did- it would've happened later, they assured me, but I just started it earlier by crying. My dad tried to leave to give me some space, but my mom sat him back down in his chair (we were about to eat dinner, so my timing was bad) like a 2 year old. Anyway, I was really upset for most of the night, especially since this happened the night before I had to leave for missions. However, I discovered a happy place- the last scene of Beauty and the Beast (yes, with the Mob Song, Gaston and Adam/Beast's confrontation, and -eek- Adam's transformation and the happy ending- of course) I watched that and suddenly felt so much better. Thanks, Disney. :D
But you know what I discovered? Most people, when they write a screenplay, even if it's for a musical, don't write the lyrics or the music. I took on 3 times the job of a normal screenwriter, and I finished half of it in the time allotted. I'm pretty darn proud of myself, I am. I'm going to give it a rest in July, and finish it during August. And come November- it's BEAUTY IS BLIND TIME!!!!
Yes, I am happy about that story. Though it requires some serious thought. I have to work out a lot of stuff.
Also, I am Catholic, (in case you didn't know) and since there's not a ton of Catholic fiction out there (at least not as much as Christian fiction- Ted Dekker, Left Behind... you know what I'm talking about) I like to put some Catholic touches in my stories. I was trying to work out a way for Beauty and the Beast to work without magic- just curses and blessings (there are legit curses- but no one calls them that anymore. Ever notice how some families always seem to get divorced or a certain disease... my mom says that's a curse. Or something. she wouldn't really talk more about it. Praying seems to get rid of 'em.) I'm having a hard time, since I want her stillborn twin Gabriel to play the "enchantress" character, as an angel, but since he's human, he can't be an angel and God wouldn't send him- he'd send an angel... and there was a bit with a demon I'm having issues with. Both Calista (Belle) and Damien (Beast) are cursed- Calista, with blindness because of a deal her mother Elani made so that Elani's father would let her marry Flavian, since Flavian was a shepherd and Elani's father was a merchant, and Elani his only child. Calista's curse was Elani's price- maybe for not upholding her part of the bargain... hmm...
Anyway, someone has just pointed me in the direction of The Shadow of the Bear series. They are Catholic Retold Fairy tales. Am kicking myself for not discovering sooner.
Can't think of anything else right now- I'm hungry (there's no food in our house- I mean, I kept complaining and my mom's like "you have pancakes, beans, and bread" What? Yeah. Oh, and protein bars. Yum! Not.)
I have an eye appointment tomorrow- I think I need stronger glasses, so this'll be fun. whohoo.

Random Quotes During the Past Few Days
Analyzing Dave and the Giant Pickle on Sunday over Elli's birthday dinner:
Dad: He must be a dill, because he sure isn't sweet
and
Elli: He's a giant pickle! What's not to love?
(Elli once got a jar of pickles for Christmas. Pretty sure it was her favorite present. Not lying. Just to give you some perspective)
All the while, I'm wondering "What if VeggieTales had stuck closer to the original Bible story and had Dave cut of Goliath's head? Kids would just think someone cut a pickle. But it's Nightmare Fuel for the Veggies. Think about that from a Veggie perspective *shudder* On second thought, don't, if you're a vegetarian!!!
Elli playing with bubbles during a severe thunderstorm watch and there's 4 bubbles sticking together.
Me: Oh look, it's a baby!
Elli: ????
Me: That's what babies look like like two seconds after they're conceived. Don't you know any biology?
And this, rather embarrassing gem:
Me: Look! It's a multicellular organization!
Elli: Organization?
Me: I mean orgasm. (realize what I just said) No no NO! I meant ORGANISM!!! ORGANISM!!!!
(Elli is not mortified enough to have comprehended this)
Me: Do you even know what an orgasm is?
Elli: No.
Me: Oh. Good. I didn't say it. Forget it.
Spent the weekend camping with my family and my aunts and uncles and my cousin- oh, and three of Elli's friends from heart camp. (she has a pacemaker, and Camp Odayin is a camp for kids with heart problems.) If you want something funny, watch The Secret World of Arrietty with a bunch of heart kids. (and Arrietty- what a beautiful name!!! Wish I could use it. It's like a fancy Aria) Anyway, lots of fun, lots of skeeter bites. I HATE getting them on my fingers and feet. Guess where I got them? Yep. *wrinkles nose and scowls*
I'm 17 and a half- officially. Elli and I are exactly 2 and 1/2 years apart, to the freaking hour. Not kidding. December 10th, 1994, 6:54 pm=me June 10th, 1997, 7:02 pm=her. Kinda scary when you think about it.
Umm... just wasted most of the day watching versions of fairy tales on Youtube. Do you know how many versions of Cinderella there are? Seriously, it's the most over-re-told fairy tale out there. My favorite? Ever After. Seriously. Love it.
Had a mission meeting today. I'm going to an Indian reservation in ND to run a residential VBS camp for 1st and 2nd graders. I'm on the skit team, and our theme is "Love Never Fails" So we're doing "The Lion King" and having Timon and Puumba teach Simba and Nala how to love and be friends. Since our skit team is 2 guys and 2 girls and we have 3 guy parts and 1 girl, I ended up being Simba! Haha! Makes me happy. Apparently, the kids there love the Lion King and that movie was watched like 5 million times last year. Wouldn't know, cuz I wasn't there. But should be fun!
That's it for now.
CAMP NANO UPDATE: 12,000 words.
SONGS:
"A Day in the Life"- don't ask. >( One verse is a major accomplishment.
"Princess at Heart"- FINISHED!!!!! I have finished my first song!!! WOOHOO!!! The tune is my own original that I rediscovered yesterday and set to rediscovered lyrics. The tune was 4 measures long and aptly titled "Unexpected Triumph"
"That Girl" - mostly written, lyrics are pretty much done, just need to add them to my Noteflight thing.
"Under the Stars" Connie and Nolan's love theme. Chorus is done, both music and lyrics. Need to write a verse or two.
"That Girl (reprise)" more done than the first. Just because the lyrics are done and the tune's the same. (villain's song)
"Under the Stars/Perfect Mystery" a mosh of both love themes. Here's the start I've got:

"That Girl" - mostly written, lyrics are pretty much done, just need to add them to my Noteflight thing.
There's something odd
about that girl
There's something not
quite right
There's something
strange about that girl
Like something's
changed overnight
I don't know what to
do with her
She's not the same;
anyone can see that
There's something odd
about that girl
There's something not
quite right
There's something
strange about that girl
Like something's
changed overnight
It's like she's
forgotten everything
That we worked so
hard to teach her
What's wrong with
her? It's beyond me to tell
What's odd about that
girl
What is not quite
right
What's so strange
about that girl
What has changed
overnight?
Oh, that girl!!
"Perfect Mystery" Jennie and Micah's love theme. Less done. Have lyrics, but the tune keeps changing so that I can fit it in with "Under the Stars" Also needs verses.
How did this come to be?
How did it work so perfectly?
It doesn't really matter to me.
It's a perfect mystery.
Perfect mystery.
"Under the Stars" Connie and Nolan's love theme. Chorus is done, both music and lyrics. Need to write a verse or two.
Here with you
Under the stars
tonight
Love so true
And it feels so right
When you're here
By my side
It's crystal clear
This night is ours
Here with me
Under the stars
"That Girl (reprise)" more done than the first. Just because the lyrics are done and the tune's the same. (villain's song)
There' something odd
about that girl
There's something not
quite right
There's something
strange about that girl
Like something's
changed overnight
It's got to be more
than just something that she saw.
It's got to be more
than what they say it is.
There's something odd
about that girl
There's something not
quite right
There's something
strange about that girl
Like something's
changed overnight
I know it's more, it
has to be.
She's changed not
once but twice.
It's almost as if
she's two different people.
Ahh...
I know what's odd
about that girl
I know what's not
quite right
I know what's strange
about that girl
Something has
changed overnight
Yes, those girls!!!
"Under the Stars/Perfect Mystery" a mosh of both love themes. Here's the start I've got:

Exciting things!!!
1. I discovered my hair is long enough to put in twoww.thisisart.com/name braids. Why is this exciting? I've always loved twin braids for no reason at all. Ever since I was a little girl. My inexplicable love of The Wizard of Oz may have had something to do with it, maybe not. And Little House on the Prairie. However, I keep cutting my hair short and deciding I want long hair again. Then I cut it, grow it, cut it, grow it... it never stops.
2. I FINALLY have a tune for the song that's been driving me nuts, "A Day in the Life" And 2 lines of lyrics!!! I will get this song, I WILL get this song. I'm counting my Camp NaNo by pages- I'm doing 100 pages in a month, but I convert it so that each page=500 words. (50000 words divided by 100 pages=500) Anyway, now I'm keeping up with my noveling cabinmates. So that's nice.
3. I've decided to learn French. Just because.
Other updates- I got a ACT study program. I NEED to get at least a 30 to get a scholarship to Concordia (full ride for 4 years- I'm halfway there! I need a gpa of 3.9 and mine is *checks gpa* Well, they haven't updated it yet, but last semester it was 4.353 and I made straight A's this semester. My PSEO classes are weighted so straight A's in high school-4.0 and straight A's PSEO >4.0) Anyway, my practice test was a 25, so I need to work on that. However, I took the test with my brothers playing Madden NFL and my sister having Nancy Drew issues next to me. Did I mention I was timed? Yeah.
I'm listening to multilanguage Disney songs and got a music book of Disney songs from the library. :D Old ones, (book published in 1985, which means no Beauty and the Beast, no Little Mermaid, no Aladdin... :( still...)
Elli's birthday is Sunday. She has this stomach issue so the doctor told her to stay off milk for 2 weeks a week ago. No ice cream cake. I made her a sherbet angel food cake instead. I myself am not so good with the dairy, but I take lactase. lactate? whatever.
Oh, yeah, and MY NOVEL CAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't have pictures (yet) but it came in the mail yesterday. My dad started to open it. We have this problem a lot, since his name is Michael Allen G. and I'm Michaila- stuff comes for MICHAEL A. and MICHAILA. Good thing I don't spell my name MICHAELA or we'd REALLY be screwed. It's bigger than I thought it would be, and the back isn't as readable as I thought it would be. I've found 3 or 4 typos already (double commas, forgot quotation marks- those little things the perfectionist in me cringes at- and the stupid microsoft word changing didnt' to didn't'. Does that to me a lot. found it in my novel. grrr.)
got to go. Adios people

When you talk in song lyrics...
After this video made my friend Cy's day:
we were talking on the phone, seeing if he'd watch our new kitten Mocha this weekend while we were camping. (Oddly enough, Mocha loves cantaloupe... weird, right?) Anyway, Elli was talking to him, and I told her to tell him that I was "still alive" So here's the conversation:
Haili: Tell him I'm still alive
Cy: We'll that's a triumph.
Haili: Yep, making a note here: huge success
Cy: It's hard to overstate my satisfaction about that
Haili: Why don't we have some cake?
Keep in mind, this was all spoken. Not sung. It was really funny, especially since Elli was playing mediator since I was driving.
I saw 2 police cars, 2 ambulances (one of which was going the wrong way down a one-way street I was on- yikes! I had a red light and it went in the other side) and a fire truck. Wonder what happened? They half scared me to death.
Okay, on to wasting time. For those of you who care: Camp NaNo=2,600 words. I fail. Miserably.
My excuses:
Friday: I don't remember, but I had one. Oh yeah, I was doing mission hours all day. 5 hours! Woohoo!
Saturday: Wedding. All day.
Sunday: wasn't allowed on computer until my room was clean
Monday: babysat all day
When I did work on it, I worked on stupid things like this:
And of course, I had to make the characters with this lovely dress up game that's inspired by Disney. WARNING: Will cause you to waste massive amounts of time. But here it is anyhow. Enjoy.
And this. (yes, again with the Noteflight, Haili...) This is the beginning of "That Girl" which has been stuck in my head all day.
Oh, and I'm learning to play this:
So epic! Okay- I'm gonna go try to write now...

The Final Chapter and a New Scene
Oh boy oh boy oh boy... very exciting things happening in my life right now!
- I just got a new microphone, so I can now record the audiobook of my novel. Why is this exciting, you may ask? The sooner I get it done, the sooner my parents read my novel. Neither has any time (or in my mom's case) any desire to read, but both spend an inordinate amount of time in the car. Put my book on CDs and they both can read it. Plus, I like recording myself playing stuff and my old microphone got lost while we cleaned the playroom. And this one is much nicer anyway.
- Also just got a new book of French horn music- and it's DISNEY! Why wouldn't this be exciting? I've spent most of the night playing Prince Ali and Go the Distance. Prince Ali is stuck in my head. But I love it.
- Elli's birthday presents came today. She's going to love them.
- I just got paid $121 for babysitting. Seems my life has been babysitting.
- I finished editing my novel. Am working on getting it up on CreateSpace. I also shared it with a few people, which is exciting.
- Elli's getting her novel up on CreateSpace as well. It's a lot smaller than she anticipated, but it looks cute and will be a good beginning chapter book.
- I figured out who to dedicate my book to. And no, I'm not telling. It's a secret!
- In a matter of 2 hours and 15 minutes Camp NaNoWriMo starts!!! Twice Upon a Time, here I come. (I was acting it out for Elli the other night using a small Mary statue as Jennie, a silver cross as Micah, a wood cross as Nolan, and an angel statue thing as Connie. I will never look at that silver cross the same way again. I felt ridiculous. It was also like 11pm...)
- My cousin's getting married this weekend! Need I say more?
- We just got memberships at the Y which is kinda fun. Did my orientation tonight and discovered that there are machine where you can bike and read AT THE SAME TIME! Forget the ellipticals and treadmills with the TVs- give me a good book and a crash free stationary bike that is klutz proof. Lee's so funny. He's so excited to go there and work out. He thinks he's so cool. "Haili, can we go to the Y every day? I need to *flexes* work out" (keep in mind, he's 11... dear me...)
Reasons why I'm not happy
- CreateSpace is being obnoxious with formatting my book. And I mean OBNOXIOUS. Every time I upload my novel, it screws something up and I have to go fix it.
