I just went to movie night at my church (mostly because my mom told me to) and they were showing October Baby. Now, if you don't know what the movie's about, it centers around a girl named Hannah Lawson who just found out that not only was she adopted, she is the survivor of a failed abortion. She goes on a journey to try and discover who she is. It's an amazing movie and you all should go see it.
Also, this week has been kinda special to my family. Exactly 16 years and 3 days ago, July 15th, 1995, my little brother Steven was born. Exactly 16 years and one day ago, he died. He had a lot of health issues and had low oxygen in his blood- something about transposition of the main vessels (the arteries/vessels in his heart were flip flopped- so the return was going to the exit and visa versa) and he had an open diaphragm which meant his insides were are mixed up. But he had good lungs- my mom heard him cry, and my dad saw him open his eye. He followed family tradition and peed on the nurses, and he fixed my father's relationship with his dad.
See, my dad was born with heart problems, just like Steven and Elli were. It runs in the family. Only when my dad was born, they didn't really know what to do. (He was born in the 60's, I think). They told my dad's parents that he wouldn't live to be 2. Well, if they had been right, I wouldn't be here today. Anyway, my grandpa didn't really want to get close to my dad because he kept thinking that my dad was going to die, so why get attached? When Steven died, and I don't know the details as I was one and a half when this all happened, but they figured it out and my dad and my grandpa are now close. My dad always says Steven is the most efficient guy he's ever known because he accomplished everything God wanted him to do in 2 days. I agree.
Anyway, there's a connection between Steven and the October Baby movie. I'm going to write it in white so if you haven't seen the movie, (because it's connected to a spoiler- it won't ruin the movie for you, but it was a great surprise, and I don't want to take that away from you) you don't have to read it. But if you've seen the movie, just highlight it and you'll see it.
Hannah discovers that she has an older twin brother (much like the twins in my story, Calista and Gabriel) and that he was severely injured (ie lost an arm) in the botched abortion attempt. He fights for 4 months, and then dies. (again, like Calista and Gabriel) His name is later revealed to be Jonathan David. I would've been named David Allen Francis had I been a boy, yet the next child born, a boy, was named Steven Curtis. My mom didn't know it, but her mom was going to name all the girls in the family (all 6 of em) Steven Curtis had they been boys. When #7 was a boy, he was named David Michael. Don't ask me why. Anyway, David's kind of a family name. That's all I can come up with for now.
Anyway, October Baby was a wonderful movie, and I want the monologue that Hannah tells the priest in the old cathedral, but I can't find the screenplay anywhere. I'll just have to keep looking.
((and yes, this post is late- sorry. Was written July 18th))
